Who is Paul Krugman?

Paul Krugman is a famous economist who was born on the 28th of February, 1953. He is a notable Professor of Economics at New York’s Graduate Center of the City University. He is also a contributor to The New York Times and received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science in the year 2008 due to his contributions to New Economic Geography and New Trade Theory.

The Prize Committee also cites Paul’s work wherein he explains the patterns of the geographic distribution of economic activity and international trade by assessing the impacts of industrial-scale as well as the choices of consumers for different services and goods.

My Review of Paul Krugman’s MasterClass

Like other courses available at MasterClass, Paul Krugman offers many things to offer to students. This includes twenty motivating lessons, access to a class workbook comprising over 90 pages with valuable activities, and access to a dedicated community.

Krugman has never done anything like this before, so it’s very special to have access like this in an online course.

If you’re a beginner, you’ll get a lot out of this MasterClass as Krugman goes into a lot of the thought processes behind economics. This is a great asset for anyone looking to get their bearings on the topic. Also, if you’re not old enough to remember the 08 financial crisis, this is a great course too because Krugman dedicates an entire lesson on the topic.

The course is also very helpful if you’re interested in understanding Krugman’s process, but I wonder if there is anything in this course you can’t learn from his laundry list of publications already available and mostly free of charge.

I’d also recommend this course to anyone that has no idea about economics. It’s a great starting point to get your mind thinking about the topic in a way that can transfer to almost any other method. You don’t have to be an economist to take advantage of knowing what persuades people to make decisions.

Also, knowing the basics will help you come tax time too. Trust me.

Paul Krugman MasterClass Cons

I’m no expert on economics but I’ve done a few courses on Great Courses Plus and know a few basics – so I came into this course excited to build my knowledge.

To be honest, I didn’t learn a lot about economics with this course. There was just a lot of commentary of today’s economics and today’s society with a few economic ideas thrown in there.

I was expecting a lot of charts and graphs and something a little more technical. However, this course was just Krugman in front of a camera talking with the odd graph.

However, the course is called “Paul Krugman teaches Economics and Society”, so maybe I’m the wrong target audience for this course, or maybe I came in expecting something this course doesn’t claim to be. The course seems to have high ratings with other students so it could be a great course for the right target audience.

Luckily, I find so much value in the MasterClass all-access pass that one course that doesn’t vibe with me isn’t a deal-breaker.

Verdict: Is Paul Krugman’s MasterClass Worth It?

For me, this course comes down to being the right target audience. If you’re a beginner and want to learn some basic thought principles behind society and economics, you’ll find a lot of value in this course.

However, if you’re experienced in economics and look at this course as a way to grow your pre-existing knowledge base, you may be the wrong audience. Instead, you should check out the rest of the MasterClass courses and see what interests you.
