Onsource: Take Pictures of Property for $18 Per Gig

Looking for a well-paid gig that requires little effort?

Onsource just might be your ticket.

Many businesses such as insurance companies, real estate firms, rental services, and other vendors need to quickly verify the current status of physical property.

This requires an inspector to be at the scene to take pictures and document details regarding the property’s condition.

One option for these companies is to send one of their own employees to inspect the property.

This can be time-consuming and prevent these employees from completing other work.

The other option is to use Onsource, which connects companies with a network of freelance inspectors who can handle these responsibilities.

That’s where you come in.

Onsource is a great moonlighting gig that provides people like you with an excellent opportunity to make money in your free time.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about becoming an inspector.

We’ll go over the different types of inspections you can get paid for, the requirements of becoming an inspector, and how much you can earn.

What Is Onsource?

Screenshot of Onsource
Onsource is an online inspection platform that outsources inspection duties to on-the-ground workers throughout the United States.

It was founded in 2011 in Massachusetts and acquired by Genpact in 2017.

Companies hire inspectors through the app to document and take pictures for the purpose of appraisals, estimates, and checking current property condition.

Think of it as an IaaS — or inspection as a service company.

Companies turn to Onsource to complete inspections instead of sending their own employees on the road to complete easy-to-do inspections that take only a few minutes.

As an inspector for the app, you can expect to take photos and videos of vehicles, vehicle accidents, property damage, and other personal property.

Companies will then use this information to create basic estimates and property appraisals for their business.

Businesses can complete all of this work remotely and it provides a great way for you to find flexible employment.

Types of Onsource Inspections

There are a few different types of inspections you’ll encounter as an inspector.

They include vehicle, property, scene, and other types.

Let’s review each one.

Vehicle Inspections

Vehicle inspections consist of checking the current condition of a vehicle and verifying certain details.

The vehicles you’ll be inspecting can include a car, truck, recreational vehicle, motorcycle, boats, trailers, and other vehicles.

You’ll be looking for things like damage to the vehicle, VIN information, odometer readings, and a detailed description of any other vehicle specifications.

This information is used for insurance claims, auction information, vehicle sales, and end-of-lease purposes.

Property Inspections

Property inspections require you to document the condition of residential, commercial, and industrial properties.

You’ll be on the lookout for address information, external damage, measurement information, and other characteristics that can help assess estimates of property damage.

This information is used for insurance claims, verification for property sales, and property management purposes.

Scene Inspections

Scene inspections are needed when something has gone awry.

This can be documenting vehicle accidents, personal injuries, workers compensation claims, and more.

This information is used by insurance agents and other clients who are conducting personal injury investigations, workers comp claims, or filing insurance claims.

Other Inspections

Beyond the realm of the three main categories detailed above, there’s also a catch-all bucket that includes anything that doesn’t fit into those particular departments.

This can be any other type of inspection a client is interested in conducting.

Benefits of Becoming an Onsource Inspector

Onsource inspectors enjoy a flexible work schedule with decent pay.

Like other task-based gigs, the assignments are easy to do and typically only take a few minutes to complete.

As an approved inspector, you can choose when you want to work and how many inspections you want to complete at any given time.

You will schedule your appointments when it’s most convenient for you.

Inspections don’t require much effort at all and only take about 10 minutes to carry out.

You’ll simply take pictures and videos of the requested property and then upload them to the Onsource app.

Your pay will be based on how many inspections you complete.

You can complete as many inspections as humanly possible, as long as you can fit them into your schedule.

The amount of inspections you complete will also depend on how many are currently available in your area.

Payment Information

Onsource inspectors are paid $18 for every inspection completed.

On top of that, you’ll be compensated 65 cents for every mile you drive after 20 miles.

This is a pretty decent wage seeing as your assignments will only take about 10 minutes to complete once you’re there.

And if you have to drive a long distance to a job — which will reduce your hourly wage — you’re compensated with an additional mileage bonus to help justify assignments that eat up more time and fuel.

Payment will be sent through check or direct deposit to your bank account.

Your payment will be sent every four weeks after you’ve completed your first inspection.

If you’re completing inspections every week, you can get in a routine of being paid every week from work that was completed four weeks prior.

Requirements of the Job

To become an Onsource inspector, you’ll need to own a vehicle, pass a background check, and provide information that proves you can legally work in the United States.

You’ll be required to provide photos of yourself and the vehicle you intend to use for driving to inspections.

Photos will be uploaded when filling out your application, which we’ll cover below.

You have two options when it comes to your background check.

The first option is to get your own background check beforehand and provide proof when applying.

The second option is to get a background check through Onsource.

This will cost you $7 to get a background check from a third-party — Clearstar.

You’ll also need to provide some personal information to fill out a W-9 tax form.

This includes information like your phone number, address, and social security number.

If you meet all of the requirements, you can apply to Onsource and then start completing inspections for cash.

How Onsource Works

Becoming an inspector is relatively easy to do and has few requirements.

Let’s go over the application process and then move on to completing your first inspection.

Fill Out an Application

The first step to becoming an inspector on the platform is filling out an application.

You can find the application on Onsource’s website.

This is where you’ll provide your personal information and upload photos of yourself, your vehicle, and a valid background check.

You’ll also create an account and password.

If you want to complete a background check through the company, your application will first need to be approved.

After it’s approved, you’ll receive an email from Clearstar — the third-party background check company — to complete your background check.

Before you begin inspecting, an Onsource employee will reach out to discuss your application.

Once this is completed, you’re ready to start doing inspections.

Complete Inspections

You’ll need to download one of the Onsource inspection apps at the App Store for iPhones or Google Play for Android.

The company has a range of mobile apps dedicated to certain clients.

While these apps have similar interfaces, some will only work with specific clients or types of inspections.

You may be required to download additional apps depending on which client has submitted an inspection request.

Each app will have its own unique phone requirements.

For example, one app may only require you to have Android 4.2 while others may require you to have Android 4.3.

Upon logging into the app, you can schedule inspections that fit into your schedule.

When Onsource sees a good fit, they’ll contact the client to set up an inspection appointment.

You’ll be notified when Onsource has confirmed an inspection time with the client.

Once an appointment date and time is confirmed, you’ll head over to the inspection site to fulfill your duties.

This will include taking multiple pictures and videos of the property of your given assignment.

Each assignment will have detailed instructions on how many photos and videos you’ll need to take, along with additional assignment tasks.

Some inspections may require more than 30 photos of a given property while others may include specific instructions such as taking a one-minute video inspection that shows an entire 360-degree view of the property.

A photo inspection should take no more than 10 minutes once you’re there.

You’ll then upload the pictures and videos of your inspection to the app.

You may also be required to provide a brief description of your encounter.

Get Paid

Once you’ve completed your assignment, the only thing left to do is to get paid.

As mentioned above, payment occurs every four weeks.

If you want steady pay and you have the time, it’s a good idea to line up as many inspections as you can.

That way you can get paid every week.

Earn Money for Conducting Inspections

Inspecting for Onsource is a great way to make money on the side.

There likely isn’t enough action on the app to fill up a full-time work schedule, but it does provide an excellent way to bring in some extra cash for the weekend.

If you work a part-time job, you should definitely consider picking up some inspections in your free time to pad your income.

Head to www.onsourceonline.com for more information about making money when it’s most convenient for you.

If you’re looking for another comparable side job, look into TaskRabbit and other weekend jobs to bring in some extra dough.
