Lyft Promo Codes (For Riders)
Want to try out Lyft but not sure if you want to fork over the money?
If you’re a new user, you can get FREE (or deeply discounted) rides, just by entering a promo code.
Ridesharing is a really competitive space (with Uber leading the charge), and these promo codes are Lyft’s way of getting new riders. It’s a win-win for everyone.
Existing riders, don’t be discouraged. There are ways you can get discounts on rides as well (we’ll get to that later).
The amount you receive when you use a promo code varies from city to city. In most cases, you’ll get $10-20 off your first few rides. In some cities, these promo codes can get you up to $50 off.
How Do I Claim A Lyft Promo Code?
Any new Lyft user can claim a new user promo code. Lyft wants people to give it a try, so they’re offering free account credit to get you started.
To receive your code, you will need to download the app and sign up for an account. You can then apply your new user credit to your first ride.
Prompts will walk you through a series of steps where you can set up your profile and payment information. Enter the information required and verify your phone number if they ask you to do so.
Once you have your rider account, you can enter a promo code to claim your first free ride. Go to the “Promos” section on the app:
And enter the code into the box that says “Promo Code:”
That’s it! Once your promo code is entered, it will automatically be applied to your next ride.
Are There Any Lyft Promo Codes for Existing Users?
There are no promo codes for existing users, but there are still ways that existing users can get discounted Lyft rides.
One of the most common ways to score a discount is through major events. If you attend a major festival, like Coachella or SXSW, Lyft sometimes has marketing staff around handing out little business cards. If your luck these little cards will have a code for you to get a discount (usually 50% off) on your next few rides.
Another way is to simply check the notifications section in the app. You’d be surprised to see how common it is for Lyft to have random promotions for existing users.
Another way to earn free rides is to take advantage of Lyft’s referral program.
In some cities, you can earn up to $2,000 per week – but you’ll have to do some work. The trick is to get new riders to use Lyft and list you as their referral. But if you’ve got some influence at school, at work, or in your community, it’s not that hard to do.
All you have to do is get other people to sign up for Lyft using your special promotional code. Just go to the “Free Rides” section in the Lyft app:
When you click that button, the screen will show you your own promo code. Send this code to everyone in your family. When they sign up and take their first ride, you’ll get a discount AND they will get a discount. So it’s really a no-brainer if you’re traveling with people who have never used Lyft before (like your parents).
My Promo Code Isn’t Working. How Can I Fix This?
If the app won’t accept your promo code, or you don’t see the credit appear in your account, don’t worry.
You can always reach out to Lyft for customer support if you experience any issues. But before you contact them directly, check to see if any of these situations apply:
- You typed in the code incorrectly. You might have the right code, but entered it incorrectly.
- Your code is expired. Most promo codes have expiration dates so double check to make sure yours is still valid. You can do this by tapping the “Promotions” tab in your app. You can learn more here.
- You’ve already used another code. Lyft only allows one credit code to be used per ride, so if you’ve already added one code, you won’t be able to add a second. While you can’t use more than one credit per ride, Lyft does allow you to switch between credits on the Payment screen after you’ve taken the trip.
- Your promo code was intended for a different location. Let’s say you have a U.S. Lyft promo code. This code won’t work in England. Check to see if the code that you’re about to enter is for the country that you’re currently in. If not, the code won’t work for you. Similarly, some promo codes only work in one specific city. While rare, make sure that your promo code will work in your current city.

A: Download the Lyft app on your phone, navigate to the Promos section, type in your code, and request your first ride when you’re ready
Q: Is Lyft available 24/7?
A: The short answer: yes. The long answer: Lyft is available as long as drivers are. If you live in a major city, you likely can find a ride at any time of the day. However, if you’re looking to catch a ride at an obscure time but live in a smaller down, it might be more difficult to find one.
Q: Is there a limit to how many promo codes I can use?
A: Lyft allows riders to use one promo code at a time. Once the current code has been exhausted, you can add another one.

A: Unfortunately, you can’t add a new passenger promo code after the trip has started. You must do this before the trip begins.

The “split payment” option will open up your contact list. From there, select the people or person you want to split the ride with. They will need to confirm the charge request while the trip is happening. After the ride is complete, you will not be able to split the fare.
Q: How do I cancel a ride?
A: Cancelling a ride is easy, but keep in mind, you may be subject to a fee. After you are matched with a driver, you have two minutes to cancel the ride free of charge. After that, you will have to pay a cancellation fee.
Q: How do I dispute a charge with Lyft?
A: Go to your “Ride History” tab in the app. Select the ride you wish to dispute. Scroll down until you see “Get Help”. If you’re an Android user, tap “Request Review.” From there, you can tell Lyft about the charge. They may ask you to provide more details if need be.
Q: Can I pay cash for a Lyft?
A: No, you cannot pay with cash for any Lyft ride. You must add a payment method to your Lyft account in order to request a ride. Uber has startedto allow for cash payments in a small number of cities. However, this is limited to a select number of cities.
Q: Do drivers get free Lyft rides?
A: No, Lyft drivers do not get free rides, but they do benefit in a different way. Both new and existing Lyft drivers are eligible to receive a variety of bonuses. To learn about each of these bonuses, check out this comprehensive guide.

A: The prices of both Lyft and Uber rides vary depending on the location, time of day/week, and what is going on in the area you’re requesting a ride.
