Are you still wondering how to earn some extra cash while playing Roblox?

If you’re all about styling your Roblox avatar with the trendiest clothing, odds are you’re a regular at the Avatar Shop. I’m also guessing you’ve splurged some serious Robux on those digital threads.

Here’s the exciting news: You, too, can join the ranks of Roblox developers who profit from trading their creations.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to sell items on Roblox and turn virtual currency into real money.

Why You Should Consider Selling Items on Roblox

Here are the top reasons selling Roblox items can be a total game-changer:

  • Earn Real Money: The Roblox Developer Exchange Program (DevEx) allows you to exchange your earned Robux for cold, hard cash.
  • Unleash Your Creativity: David Baszucki, the founder of Roblox Corporation, envisioned a platform where users can create and share their games. You can be a part of this creative ecosystem by designing avatar clothes and putting them up for sale.
  • Access to a Massive Customer Base: With over 66 million daily active users, your Roblox items can reach all corners of the world.
  • Build Your Reputation: As players discover your creations, your influence within the Roblox community can grow, opening doors to opportunities and collaborations.

Problems With Selling Items on Roblox

Selling items in the Roblox Marketplace isn’t without drawbacks. Below are the challenges you must consider before you start a career designing Roblox items:

1. Competitive Market

The Roblox Marketplace is a bustling hub with thousands of creators vying for attention. Standing out among the competition is daunting, especially if you’re new to the scene.

On top of that, discriminating users value the quality of designs, making it more challenging to capture buyers’ interest.

2. Copyright Issues

There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing the fruits of your hard work replicated by some sneaky Roblox players.

These copycats can flood the Roblox Marketplace with rip-offs of your original design. Worse, they’re profiting from them.

While you can always file a report for copied assets with Roblox, resolving the issue takes time. Some designers watermark their templates or provide a link to the original in the comments section to prove authenticity.

3. Scammers in the Roblox Marketplace

Here’s the not-so-fun part of the Roblox platform: scammers!

These unscrupulous users will stop at nothing to steal your Roblox account, including your items and creations. They’ll offer free Robux, even if there’s no such thing.

Remember that you can only give away Robux through a Robux gift card.

Requires Time and Dedication

As a side hustle, selling items on Roblox doesn’t guarantee substantial earnings. If you’re looking to turn it into a primary source of income, keep in mind that it’s not a passive stream.

You must regularly create and upload high-quality items, engage with the community, and market your creations.

Designing alone demands countless hours, attention to detail, and creative energy. You should also keep up with trends, explore different themes, and adjust your offerings.

What You’ll Need to Sell Items on Roblox

Here’s everything you need to start selling Roblox items:

1. Roblox Premium Subscription

Anyone can buy Roblox items, but you must be a premium member to sell them. You can choose from these options:

PlanCostMonthly Robux Allowance
Premium 450$4.99450
Premium 1000$9.991000
Premium 2200$19.992200

All Roblox Premium members can also:

  • Access DevEx
  • Get 10% more Robux with every purchase of the in-game currency
  • Participate in private selling
  • Trade items
  • Resell Roblox-created Limiteds and Limited U items

2. Roblox Studio

Roblox Studio

Roblox Studio is a powerful software for creating virtual worlds and immersive experiences on Roblox. You need it to test your items before you submit them to Roblox for review.

You can get Studio from the Roblox website. Once you’ve installed it, sign in with your Roblox account, and you can start designing avatar clothes for sale.

3. Robux

Robux is how you pay for everything in the Roblox universe, including the privilege to sell items in the Marketplace.

You can only list items in the Marketplace if you pay an upload fee. It’ll cost you 10 Robux to upload classic clothing for sale, except for t-shirts.

You’ll only pay 10 Robux when you initially put t-shirts up for sale. That means you won’t have to pay another fee to relist them (after taking them off the shelf).

4. Image Processing Software

Here are some popular software you can use to design your Roblox items:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Canva
  • GIMP
  • Paint.NET
  • Pixlr

What Items to Sell on Roblox

Having a Roblox Premium membership entitles you to sell these items:

1. Classic Clothing

These assets are 2D renditions that you can slap on the surface of a Roblox avatar. There are three Classic Clothing types:

  • T-shirt: These are square images, typically measuring 512×512 pixels. You can put them right in front of the torso.
  • Shirt: These images cover the avatar’s upper body, extending to the sleeves. The template includes the torso, right arm, and left arm.
  • Pants: These images wrap around a section of the torso and the legs. The template contains the torso, right leg, and left leg.

2. Limited Items

Limiteds are previously regular items that have become limited after Roblox takes them off the avatar shop.

You can resell and trade them with other premium members. For example, this rare item now costs almost a billion Robux!

3. Limited Unique Items

Roblox sells these items in specific quantities upon release. Once sold out, Limited U items become available for resale or trading.

These assets are more valuable than Limiteds and come with serial numbers, some of which are most sought-after by collectors.

4. User-Made Limiteds

If you’ve successfully applied for the UGC program, you can sell your creations, including 3D accessories and layered clothing.

UGC Limiteds are new versions of Limited Unique items that could sell for up to 10,000 Robux (original price), like this Gold Phoenix.

How to Sell Items on Roblox: Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps for selling Roblox items:

Step 1: Sign Up for Roblox Premium

Roblox Premium

Head to the Roblox homepage and find the Get Premium button on the left side of the screen.

Then, just follow the steps on the screen, and you’ll have your premium membership up and running in a jiff.

Step 2: Create Items

Use your favorite photo editor app to design your merch. For a T-shirt, you only need to draw a square image and apply your slogan, logo, or decal art within the frame.

When designing a shirt or pants, download these templates first:

Next, pull up your template on your photo editor and draw your design on top of the blocks. You can apply color, textures, pictures, and other elements to the template.

Lastly, save your work on your computer, ensuring it’s a png file type.

Step 3: Test Your Design

Open Roblox Studio and go to the Avatar tab. Click the Rig Builder to start testing your clothes on a mannequin.

A popup menu with a list of different rigs will appear. Choose a rig, and it’ll drop the Dummy on your workspace.

Then, hover over the Dummy and click the ⊕ button. This will let you put the newly created clothes on the sample avatar.

Lastly, test your clothes on different rigs to ensure they look perfect on a broad range of avatars.

Step 4: Upload Your Item

Open the Roblox website again and hit the Create button from the top menu. On your Creator Dashboard, navigate to Creations > Avatar Items.

On the main panel, you’ll see the following selections: T-Shirts, Shirts, and Pants. Select the clothing type, and then click the Upload Asset button. Find your design and tap on the thumbnail.

You can now give your item a name and description. Next, click the Upload button and confirm that you’re willing to pay 10 Roblux.

You’ll find your item added to your assets under the corresponding clothing type.

Step 5: List Your Item for Sale

Choose the uploaded asset under the clothing type. You can still tweak the name and description at this stage, so have at it.

Afterward, toggle on the On Sale option and set the price. Below, a note reads, “Creator earnings (70%).” That’s because Roblox collects a 30% commission for every user-generated asset.

Once you’re done, save your changes and exit the Creator Dashboard. You can now check the item in your inventory. You’ll also find your avatar rocking its brand-new swag!

Things to Consider When Selling Items on Roblox

Consider these factors before selling Roblox items:

1. Demand

Get a sense of what Roblox players are into. Are there movies, personalities, or viral memes they’re crazy about?

Explore different genres and keep up with pop culture trends for a better chance of selling. You can also seek inspiration from the hottest games on the platform.

Also, players love dressing up their avatars to match the season or upcoming holidays. For example, create festive outfits for Christmas and Halloween.

2. Pricing

Set a reasonable and competitive price for your merch. Look at similar items in the Marketplace to gauge what other creators are charging.

It’s essential to find a good mix between turning a profit and making your stuff accessible to buyers.

3. Quality

When creating Roblox assets, remember that the devil is in the detail. So, ensure that every design aspect brings out your intended style.

Incorporate tiny, intricate details to elevate your design and use a color palette that complements your theme.

4. Commission

Roblox gets a piece of the pie every time you make a sale of your items in the Marketplace. If you sell the Roblox item within an experience, the experience owner will also get a portion of the profit.

The same goes for selling Limiteds. If you resell a Limited item, you’ll split the payment between Roblox and the creator.

Another catch: You can only get your commission 30 days after the purchase date.

5. Roblox Community Standards

Roblox strives to create a safe and inclusive environment for its vast user community. When designing items, steer clear of anything that promotes the following:

  • Self-harm
  • Extreme violence
  • Discrimination
  • Explicit content
  • Political content
  • Anything illegal

6. Cashing Out Robux

You can only exchange your earned Robux for cash through DevEx. You must meet these requirements to qualify for the program:

  • Be 13 or older
  • Have a valid DevEx account and verified email
  • Have tax files with Roblox
  • Earn at least 30,000 Robux
  • Comply with Terms of Use and Roblox Community Standards
