If you want to work for Uber and are ready to apply to be a driver, take a moment and make sure you’re doing so in the smartest way possible.

By using a new Uber driver promo code, new drivers can guarantee that they earn a baseline income at the start of their time as an independent contractor for Uber. While the app doesn’t hand out driver sign-up bonuses as it once did, they do guarantee that, provided you hit a threshold number of trips completed, you will be compensated a guaranteed amount no matter how much you earn on the rides.

That amount? It varies per location. In this article, we’ll talk about the right Uber code to use when signing up as a driver, how you can still enter a referral code if you’ve already signed up to drive, plus how to earn extra money as either a rider or driver by using your customized Uber referral code.

What Is the Uber Invite Code for 2018?

To earn a new driver bonus for signing up to become an Uber driver, use promo code “PRGEY”.

This Uber driver promo code will guarantee you a certain amount of money provided you hit a certain number of trips once you start driving.

For example, right now they are offering a guarantee of $2,900 for your first 400 trips in Washington, D.C. If you conduct 400 trips and don’t make $2,900, Uber guarantees that they will make up the difference.

So no matter how much you make in your first 400 trips, you’re going to walk away with $2,900. If you earn more than that, however, that’s the end of the deal.

And that’s also just for Washington, D.C. Each guaranteed amount is dependent on where you are located. Each city that Uber operates in has different thresholds both for money guaranteed and amount of trips needed, and doesn’t offer one guaranteed cash bonus as it has in the past.

Lyft, on the other hand, still does offer a guaranteed cash bonus for new drivers. Lyft, like Uber, does require that drivers complete a certain amount of trips, but instead of covering the difference for a guaranteed amount of money, Lyft will just reward drivers with a cash bonus. Drivers can decide what bonus they want to target — if they choose to complete 100 trips in their first 30 days, they can earn $200. If they choose 50 rides, a $100 bonus, and 25 rides, $50.

With regards to Uber, whether you make the money back in the amount of rides needed depends on what service you provide. If you drive UberX, you might not make as much money in 400 trips as someone driving a Mercedes and providing UberBLACK service, or someone driving for UberSUV, which can earn more money per trip.

How Do I Enter the Invite Code?

There are two ways to get a new driver sign-up bonus via a referral code. The first is to follow a direct referral link (ours is here) that will take you to a landing page to sign up to be a new driver. The other way is to manually enter the code after you’ve signed up to be a driver.

Either way, you’ll need to complete the Uber sign-up process. To do so, go to Uber.com and fill out the application form. The application first checks that you meet the Uber driver requirements and the Uber vehicle requirements.

The requirements to drive for Uber are:

  • You must be at least 21 years old
  • Licensed to drive in the U.S. for at least one year, or three years if you’re under age 23
  • Have access to a 4-door vehicle that is 10 years old or newer (in most cities)
  • In-state auto insurance with your name on the policy
  • In-state driver’s license
  • In-state license plates with current registration (commercial plates are acceptable as well)
  • You must have a Social Security number

The process then requires you to complete a background check, which usually takes five to seven days to complete and examines your driving experience and criminal history. If you pass the background check, you will then be able to download the Uber driver app, and start booking trips.

If you have already gone through the process of applying and downloaded the app, it’s not too late to enter your referral code.

Uber allows you 15 days to enter a referral code after you’ve signed up to become a driver. Just visit the Support web page here, explain that you didn’t enter the code when you signed up but have one, provide the referral code “PRGEY,” and you should be all set.

Why Is My Bonus Different Than Other Drivers’?

Uber’s guaranteed cash amounts are based on your location. Some cities will have guaranteed amounts into the high hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and some will be smaller than that.

If you’re in a larger city where demand and competition are greater (think: Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas) the Uber driver bonus might be greater than a smaller city or town where there isn’t as much demand for drivers. But if you follow the link provided, and enter your location, it will tell you what the bonus will be for your location.

How to Make Your Own Referral Code (And Make More Money)

Every rider and driver has their own unique Uber referral code, which can earn you extra cash.

If you’re a rider, your referral code is located in your app under the settings tab. From there, you tap “Free Rides.”

Once there, you will see your unique invite code as well as a referral link to share. While riders are encouraged to refer other riders to the program, the invite code will work for drivers as well.

If you’re a driver and want to find your Uber driver invite code, sign in to the Uber driver app or their Uber partner website. From there you’ll be able to get your personalized referral link and share with other people who can sign up to be drivers.

The referral bonus that drivers get for signing up new drivers is a really effective way to make extra cash. A driver wrote recently that “I have personally earned thousands of dollars by referring people to the app and can tell you that it’s pretty easy money as long as you are willing to grind for it.”

How to Make Money By Referring Riders

Drivers can make money referring other drivers, but you can also make money by referring riders to the app.

What’s nice about the process is that, for both drivers or riders, your referral code is consistent no matter who you are signing up. If you meet someone who doesn’t use Uber, just have them download the Uber app with your referral code.

If you are a rider and you have a friend sign up using your referral code, his or her first ride will be free. And your next ride will be a free ride (provided it’s less than $5).

If you’re a driver, the Uber sign-up bonus can be a bit more lucrative, and provides direct cash as opposed to a ride credit. (Bonus amounts vary depending on location.) Drivers will receive their sign-up bonuses in the “Miscellaneous or Other Payments” section of their payment statement, and Uber asks that you give them one to two weeks to allow the payment to process and show up in your pay statement.

Uber also notes that the number of successful referrals will not show up in your driver app, and there is only just the one referral link per person — you can’t create personalized links for special instances.

Uber Invite Code FAQs

To wrap up, let’s address some common questions about Uber invite codes.

What if I’ve already signed up without using a referral code?

No problem. If you visit Uber support, explain to them what happened, and provide the referral code you have (“PRGEY” is one that will work), they will retroactively apply it to your account. They ask that you do this within 15 days of signing up, however.

What determines how much Uber guarantees me for my first number of rides?

Each guarantee changes by city, so it is totally dependent on where you are trying to become a driver.

How I can earn more money once I have my referral code?

To generate your own referral code, go into Account Settings, and there you will be able to locate your individual referral code, whether you are a driver or a rider. That code never changes, and can be applied whether you are inviting a new rider or driver to Uber.

To start earning, share that code with friends or potential riders, and every time someone signs up to use the service or work for Uber, you’ll receive money in your account. (Give Uber a few weeks to process referral bonuses.)

Invite Others, Earn Money

Referral codes are a smart way for Uber drivers both at the start of their time with the company — as a way to ensure guaranteed income no matter what they earn on their first set of rides — and ongoing, by earning cash by referring both drivers and riders to use the app.

While Uber does not offer a cash bonus to new drivers as it once did, its guarantee for drivers to earn a set amount is still a good way for new drivers — especially those driving UberX and not some of the more lucrative options — to make sure they earn good money driving for Uber.
