How to Pass the Grubhub Background Check With Flying Colors

The Grubhub background check is one of the most important pieces of the driver application process. In this guide, we'll cover everything that could hold you back from passing and getting on the road.

The gig economy is full of opportunities for side hustlers to make an extra buck while calling their own shots.

As a gig worker, you’re given the freedom of being your own boss and playing by your own rules.

Sounds great and all, but this isn’t exactly the Wild West.

Even though your flexible work schedule is largely in your own hands, there are certain rules to be followed.

Furthermore, on-demand gig companies, like the food delivery service Grubhub, don’t let just anyone walk in off the street and start working.

There are requirements that must be met to ensure that users have a safe and positive experience.

In this article, we’re going to take a close look at the Grubhub background check process.

Read on if you’re in search of background check criteria, how soon you can expect to receive your results, and additional driver requirements.

Why Do I Need to Pass a Background Check?

Grubhub requires all of its drivers to pass a background check to ensure its customers are safe and feel comfortable using the service.

Since you’ll be an independent contractor picking up takeout orders and delivering them to customers’ homes and their places of employment, Grubhub wants to make sure you’re a safe and responsible employee.

In order for many gig economy services to work, hungry diners must be able to trust the people they’re interacting with.

Nothing sinks a gig company’s public image faster than bad publicity regarding a breach of customer safety.

Take, for instance, the terrible events and publicity that surround Uber when one of its drivers commits sexual assault while working for Uber.

In order for Grubhub to protect customers from abuses like this, they must have a strict screening process that doesn’t allow bad apples to slip through the cracks.

That’s where the background screening process comes in.

How Does the Background Check Process Work?

When applying to become a Grubhub delivery driver, part of the application process includes passing a background check.

The basic requirements for becoming a driver are similar to those of other delivery jobs.

To start, let’s take a look at all of the Grubhub driver requirements.

  • At least 19 years of age (21 in Chicago)
  • At least 2 years driving experience
  • Own an iPhone with iOS 10 or higher or an Android with 4.0 or higher (with data plan)
  • Valid driver’s license and car insurance (for drivers)
  • Valid state ID (for bikers)
  • Checking account for direct deposit
  • Pass a driving and criminal background check

Once you reach the end of the application process, the final step is to provide your Social Security number to complete the background check.

Instead of Grubhub handling the background check, they opt to use a third party to screen applicants.

What Is Checkr?

Checkr is a third-party employment screening platform that Grubhub uses to run its employee background checks.

Checkr.com specializes in running background checks for many on-demand services that operate in the gig economy space.

Other gig companies that use Checkr include Instacart, Postmates, and DoorDash.

How to Pass the Grubhub Background Check

Since Checkr’s sole focus is screening applicants, you can expect a quick turnaround when it comes to receiving your results.

Typically you’ll hear back via email within a few days of applying.

What Does the Background Check Look For?

The Checkr screening process looks at your lifetime employment, education, and criminal history.

In regards to your driving and criminal record, Checkr looks at the previous seven-year period.

Checkr also offers ongoing screening to gig companies.

This means that Checkr will continue to monitor and run random checks while you’re working.

It’s unclear if Grubhub implements this continuous checking, but this method is used by rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft.

If they’re using this process, we think it’s only a matter of time until Grubhub follows suit.

What Will Disqualify You From Driving?

Grubhub will disqualify applicants who are felons, sexual offenders, dangerous criminals, or have major violations on their record.

Grubhub reserves the right to use its own discretion to disqualify you from employment.

This means there isn’t an exact criteria that’s set in stone that may prevent you from employment.

It’s OK to have some violations on your driving or criminal record, but if you have major violations or several criminal offenses, you may be disqualified from contention.

Also, it will be more difficult for you to drive for Grubhub if you have restrictions on your license.

For example, if for any reason you’re only able to legally drive during certain times or in certain areas, Grubhub may not want you on their workforce.

How Can You Check on the Status of Your Background Check?

Typically your background check results will be sent to you within a few days.

If you’d like to check the status of your background check you can always head to Checkr to receive an update.

To check the status of your background check, you can head to Checkr’s applicant portal to receive an update.

From there you’ll need to fill out your phone number, email, Social Security number, and date of birth.

Once you submit your personal information, you’ll be able to see the status of your current background check.

If you have additional questions regarding your background check, you can either head to Chekr’s FAQ section for further help, or contact Grubhub customer service to work through the issue.

What If You Didn’t Pass the Background Check?

If you received notice that you didn’t pass your background check, you can always reach out to Grubhub to address any issues or concerns.

If this the case for you, email [email protected] to address your concerns with a driver specialist.

It should be noted that you will likely not have much luck if you have a spotty criminal record, especially if you have major violations or sexual misconduct charges.

If you feel as though there was an error with how the results were reported, you can dispute the results and hopefully receive a ruling in your favor.

Sign Up, Deliver Food, Make Cash

So do you think you are capable of being a Grubhub driver?

The mobile food ordering company could be your next side hustle and help you pull in some extra cash on the side.

You just need a relatively clean record, a vehicle to get you from A to B, and the drive to start making money.

If you think Grubhub is right for you, you can begin the sign-up process by heading to Grubhub to start your application.
