What Is ClassPass?

ClassPass is an app that lets you book individual classes at top fitness studios in your city.

You buy a package that gives you a number of credits for the month, and then once you have those credits, you can spend them on different classes.

(More in-demand gyms will offer classes at higher rates, and time of day may also factor into the number of credits required to book.)

Founded in New York by a 28-year-old woman who was tired of trying to find an open spot in a ballet class in the city, ClassPass Inc. has skyrocketed in size, and the company boasts millions of bookings a year across a host of cities all over the world.

(It’s still located in NYC, with a corporate flagship office at 275 7th Avenue.)

The company also recently acquired GuavaPass in an ambitious expansion.

The app is available on Android and iOS, and when reviewing classes, you can see everything offered at your desired time slot.

How to Cancel ClassPass Classes and Membership

The app also has many great features including the ability to share your class schedule with friends so they can book with you, the ability to remember favorite gyms and instructors and more.

Payment is made through major credit cards and auto-renews every month, though you always have the freedom to change your membership.

(They offer a ClassPass Lite membership which allows you to only pay for a few credits monthly, very handy for people who have a major work project, or are recovering from an injury.)

For those months that you don’t spend all your credits, their policy allows you to roll over up to 10 credits every month, which can be applied to the next billing cycle.

The company has also started offering ClassPass Live.

This feature lets you stream top pilates, yoga, and other fitness classes via any streaming devices, so you can get the best of ClassPass studios from the comfort of your living room.

How to Use ClassPass

Your ClassPass membership will give you a certain number of credits each month, which will be redeemable for anywhere from 2–15 classes, depending on your membership level.

Each class on ClassPass costs a certain number of credits.

How many credits any given class will cost is determined by a range of factors which include: class time, popularity, studio drop-in rate, studio equipment, and more.

A two-hour pilates class right after work or on a weekend will generally cost more credits than a 30-minute strength training class at 2:00 p.m. on a Tuesday.

To reserve a spot in a fitness class for the first time, you’ll need to search for studios near you.

You can do this on the go by loading the ClassPass mobile app and selecting “Find a Class” from the options at the bottom.

Once you find a class that looks appealing, book it by clicking “Reserve.”

ClassPass studio reservations can be made for most classes as far in advance as one week and as last minute as up to 5 minutes before the class starts.

If your desired class is booked up, it’s worth checking back.

People may cancel their reservations or the studio may release more spots to ClassPass, enabling you to reserve a fitness class you thought was unavailable.

How Much Does ClassPass Cost?

Your ClassPass membership rate will vary depending on the city in which you sign up and how many credits you would like to have in your membership.

The number of credits you have will determine how many classes you can take and more popular classes will cost more credits to reserve.

ClassPass memberships in New York City, for example, range from $49 per month to $159 per month, and in Dallas, Texas, rates range from $39 per month to $119 per month.

If you run out of ClassPass credits in any given month, you can simply purchase more to carry you through that month.

Frequently Asked Questions About ClassPass

While reaching a human being at ClassPass seems to be a complicated and slow process, ClassPass doesn’t completely ignore their customers.

Instead of having a huge ClassPass customer service team, they have a fairly comprehensive database of common issues and their solutions.

It seems that most customers are able to resolve their issues using the database, which you can access at https://help.classpass.com/hc/en-us.

Some of the most common questions and concerns ClassPass users have are:

Can I See a List of Studios?

Yes, you can. To see a list of studios that ClassPass partners with:

  • Ensure you’re logged out of your ClassPass account (otherwise you’ll be directed to another page)
  • Go to the ClassPass homepage
  • Click on “Explore Studios” at the top of the screen

What are Credits?

Credits are what you use to book your classes through ClassPass. In some cities, you can also use your credits to book wellness and gym time.

Your membership plan will determine how many credits you receive a month and you choose how to spend those credits.

Each class has its own credit rate which is being dynamically set based on several factors which include:

  • class time
  • studio
  • location
  • time of booking
  • studio drop-in rate
  • popularity
  • studio equipment
  • number of visits in a cycle

If you’re running short on credits, you can purchase more and ClassPass will rollover up to 10 unused credits to your next month.

Can I Attend a Class Without a Reservation?

No, you need to book your class in advance through ClassPass.

If you choose to attend a class without booking in advance, you may end up paying the studio’s drop-in rate, which tends to be significantly more expensive.

On the plus side, the ClassPass mobile app allows you to book classes on the go.

Many classes accept reservations up to five minutes before the class starts, so you can book your spot on your way to the studio.

What Is the Class Cancellation Policy?

The late cancellation and missed class fees will vary depending on the country and currency in which your membership is based.

  • Late cancellation fee: If you cancel your class reservation within 12 hours of class time, you will be charged a fee.
  • Missed class fee: If you miss your class reservation without canceling, you will be charged a fee within seven days of class.

In the United States, the late cancellation fee is $15 and the missed class fee is $20.

You can check the rates for other countries in the image below.

Whether you late cancel or miss your reservation, the class won’t count as one of your studio visits and your studio credits will be returned to your account.

How Many Times Can I Visit a Studio Each Cycle?

You can visit most studios on ClassPass as much as you want.

The more often you visit a specific studio, the more the credit rate may increase.

If that happens, you’ll receive a message explaining this.

The number of classes you can attend at a studio before triggering a credit rate increase will depend on your plan.

If you need more credits, you can head to your Account Settings to purchase more or buy them as you book classes.
